31 Years and I’m Still Here!

At Asher’s, we are one big family and we want you to meet the staff! Mary Ellen Ruskowski (AKA Mel) has been working at Asher’s since August 1982, that’s just over 31 years! Mel started at Asher’s when she was 17, as a candy packer. Just a short five years later she was the lead lady in production. When she first started she was very intimidated and had to learn things quickly in order to keep up, and now you can definitely say that 31 years later, Mel knows (almost) all there is to know about Asher’s and chocolate! The History of the S’more

Asher's Milk Chocolate Covered S'more

The word ‘s’more’ conjures images of childhood campfires. You’re probably envisioning them right now – gooey marshmallow and melted chocolate gushing between two graham crackers. Asher's Store: Then & Now
Asher’s Store: Then & Now

Emma first started working at Asher’s, October 31, 1998. While she didn’t dress up for Halloween, she definitely might have had a touch of black nail polish and sparkles in her hair from a party the night before. Emma remembers thinking on her first day “I get to work with candy all day long!” Coming from the insurance industry, it was quite a welcome change. While guests are not allowed on the factory floor, a 100’ viewing corridor offers a birds-eye view of candy moving along the belt and passing through a constant flow of chocolate. One can also come and enjoy a self-guided multi-media tour explaining the process of making our delicious treats.

Dating back at least 3,000 years, Egyptian hieroglyphics provide proof that sugar confectionery existed as an art form. The Romans viewed a confectioner as a highly skilled craftsman. In fact, their regard for these culinary artisans was so great that they created a confectioner’s kitchen. As a result, the kitchen was complete with pots, pans and other utensils that were similar to their modern counterparts. Continue reading The History of Candy and American Candy Companies
